Introduction of the St. Maarten & Curaçao Caribbean Guilder (XCG) FAQs

  • Do I need to update my debit or credit cards, account number?

You do not need to update your debit or credit card information, nor will there be any changes to your account number. Your current payment methods will continue to work as usual, and there is no need to take any action on your part.

  • Will there be any disruptions to banking services during the transition?

While Republic Bank is still finalizing the details, please be assured that specific dates and times for any service interruptions will be communicated to you well in advance of the March 31, 2025 implementation date.

  • How will ATMs and cash deposits be affected?

Starting April 1, 2025, ATMs will no longer accept ANG (Antillean Guilders) deposits. Customers who need to deposit ANG cash can do so over the counter at any of Republic Bank branch locations until March 31, 2026. From April 1, 2025, XCG (Caribbean Guilders) cash can be deposited through the ATMs or at the counter in any branch.

  • Can I deposit ANG and XCG together?

Both ANG and XCG currencies can be deposited at the same time over the counter. However, as part of our standard procedures and in line with common practice for over the counter (OTC) currency deposits, we kindly request that these currencies be separated during the deposit process. This ensures that each currency is processed correctly and efficiently. A separate voucher will be required for each currency.

  • Do I need to complete a source of funds to deposit old bills?

We would like to remind you that in accordance with our policies and regulatory requirements, Source of Funds (SOF) documentation will continue to be required for all deposits (ANG and/or XCG) exceeding the established threshold. This procedure ensures that we comply with anti-money laundering regulations and maintain a secure and transparent environment for all transactions.

  • Do I need to open an account to change my old bills to the new Caribbean Guilder if I don’t currently have an account with Republic Bank?

Exchanges can be made at the commercial banks where you hold an account, for up to 12 months after the introduction of the Caribbean guilder. You will not be required to open a new account.
Note: From April 1st, 2025 all deposits held with Republic Bank will automatically be available to you in the new XCG currency.

  • Will there be a fee for exchanging old currency for the Caribbean Guilder?

There are no fees to change from ANG to XCG currency.

  • How long after the transition period will the “old notes” be accepted?

Exchanges can be made at any commercial bank for 12 months (March 31st, 2026) after introduction of the Caribbean Guilder. After these 12 months, ANG can still be exchanged at the Central Bank of Curacao and Sint Maarten for up to 30 years after the introduction date.

  • How will the introduction of the Caribbean Guilder affect international wire transfers?

Starting April 1, 2025, wire transfers in Antillean Guilder (ANG) will no longer be processed. All incoming and outgoing wire transfers must be conducted in Caribbean Guilders (XCG). Any wire transfers remitted in ANG will be automatically rejected from this date. To ensure a smooth transaction process, kindly make sure that all future wire transfers are remitted in XCG. We recommend that you make the necessary adjustments to your payment instructions before the effective date to avoid any delays or disruptions in your transfers.

  • What will be the denominations of the Caribbean Guilder?

The new banknote denominations are more in line with the general international payment systems practices. The Caribbean Guilder coins will be issued in the following denominations: 5 guilders, 1 guilder, 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents and 1 cent.
For banknotes, the denominations will be 200 guilders, 100 guilders, 50 guilders, 20 guilders and 10 guilders.

  • What will be the exchange rate to the US$?

Like the ANG, the Caribbean Guilder will be legally pegged to the U.S. dollar at an exchange rate of US$1 = ANG 1.82 (sell rate).

  • What is the exchange rate between the Netherlands Antillean Guilder and the Caribbean Guilder?

The exchange rate between the Netherlands Antillean Guilder and the Caribbean Guilder is 1:1. The Netherlands Antillean Guilder and the Caribbean Guilder are of equal value.
